Travel credit option for COVID-19 cancellations
Airbnb is offering guests that cancel due to COVID-19 the option to receive a 100% travel credit (instead of a refund) that will be automatically applied to their next booking.
Airbnb is implementing a travel credit that can be applied across multiple transactions. Additionally, the value will be reinstated if the booking is subsequently cancelled or altered down by the guest. Previously granted coupons will now be converted to a travel credit in the system.
How it works
Cancellations
If the travel credit is applied to a booking that is subsequently cancelled by guest, host, admin:
Any applied Travel Credit amounts are reinstated to the guest subject to the original expiration date.
Examples:
- Guest opts-in to receive 100% Travel Credit worth $600 in value that expires on 15 December 2021
- Guest makes a new booking with total amount of $500
- Guest applies $500 of $600 value of their Travel Credit
- Cancelled booking $500 applied
- $500 value to reinstated to the guest with expiration of 15 December 2021 that can be auto-applied to next booking
- This is combined with the original $100 residual amount, so the full amount of the travel credit should be reinstated back to $600
Alterations
Altering down
If a travel credit is applied to a booking that is subsequently altered down by guest, host, Airbnb admin:
Any applied travel credit amounts can be reinstated to the guest subject to the original expiration date. Examples:
- Guest opts-in to receive 100% Travel Credit worth $600 in value
- New booking total = $500 and guest applies $500 of $600 value
- Booking is altered down, new booking total = $400
$100 value to be reinstated to the Guest and applied to next booking
- This will have the same expiration date as before and will be combined with the residual value for future Airbnb
Altering up
Important: This travel credit may not be applied in alter-up scenarios.
If a travel credit is applied to a booking that is subsequently altered up by guest, host, admin, then guest is responsible for paying the incremental difference.
